How did your production skills develop through this project?
When starting this project, I had little if no knowledge regarding the production of a magazine and all the stages involved. I improved a lot my production skills starting with creating my blog and its’ content. Research and planning it helped me a lot in terms of understanding the process of creating a magazine and the composition of each page. I had to choose a few magazines and analyze them, not only those that with a topic that inspire me but also some magazines with a completely different genre from culture and psychology, such as fashion or sport magazines.
Also, my Preliminary work- Living Underground- developed a lot my production and editing skills – which I used in the magazine process- and introduced my in the real world of editing media products. I had never worked before with programs such as Photoshop, Illustrators, InDesign or Lightroom till I did the Preliminary project, which, I think was very useful and which from I learned a lot. Through those programs I cropped and edit a lot of photos and I gained experience by spending hours do so.
By working in Photoshop, I learned how to use specific tools such as the magnetic lasso tool, the healing tool, the patch tool, clone stamp tool...which all helped me to realize my work and to maximize its futures. Also, the whole project was assembled in InDesign, where I used most of the tools the program offers such as guidelines, the scale tool, eyedropper tool, rectangle tool (which really improved and efficiencies the process), selection tool... I also used Lightroom where I learned how to balance the color pallets and the light of the picture in concordance with its massage and connotation. This program developed my experience by using the Red eye correction, the Spot remove, the Radial filter and the Graduated Filter.
In order to find a more creative way to do my critical creative reflection I also downloaded and learn how to use different applications and programs such as Mindjet Mindmanager & Prezi which helped to make my presentations more interactive and interesting to read. In terms of settings of the camera, I learned how to create an appropriate exposure by synchronizing the ISO with the aperture and the time of the photo depending on what effect I wanted to create. I also learned how to cope with shadows, darkness and bright light.
Moreover, the hole process helped me to improve my communication skills, as I had to interact with a lot of people for the “On the streets photo-shoots” and also I improved my courage and the acceptability of being refused.
To manage my time was, in my opinion, the most difficult part, because learning to use a specific program takes a lot of time if you don’t have the necessary information, so online tutorials helped me a lot to reduce the time spent. Another thing that really helped me with managing my time was planing the hole process. Planing all the dates, and presuming the time in which I want to finish my tasked helped a lot and make the flow of the process more efficient.
