This summer my interest in street arts increased a lot so I decided to make a research and to travel to different places to take photos of graffiti-es. (This research objective was to discover new places and ideas for my preliminary work.)
It all started in Athens, where I was fascinated that the town was full of graffiti-es and street paintings. This street art makes the beauty of Athens and makes it more playful and dynamic. I started taking photos of the street art in Athens, where the antique buildings in communion with the modern paintings create an unusual setting. I also started to seek places full of street art in Romania: in Cluj-Napoca and in Timisoara.
From this research, I figured out what I wanna create for my preliminary work and my whole bunch of ideas started to shape a more concrete vision of what I wanna create for my preliminary work.
The most challenging part for the planning part was to decide the song for which I wanted to create a music video, as a practice for my final project. But, as I watched a lot of videos and I listened to a lot of songs, my mind sets on the song " Drop the Game" by Australian musicians Flume and Chet Kaker which can be framed in the pop music genre. The fluidity and the beats of the song are creating a perfect setting and opportunity to practice different filming techniques and angles. The meaningful words gave me the opportunity to transmit something deeper and more profound to the audience by using certain codes and conventions in my video. Initially, I started from the idea that I wanna create an illustrative music video, in order to create a strong bond between my video content and the lyrics of the song, through which I can diffuse better the true meaning that I wanted to represent. But as I was generating more concrete ideas about how I would like my music video to look like, I realized that my intentions were leading to a conceptual type of video more than an illustrative one.
The video from the song that I choose inspired me and gave me the motivation to create a pretty similar type of video and to generate the same feeling and style of melancholy and coldness through dance. Finally, as I wanted to constitute a visual experience that establishes and creates the mood expressed through the musical lyrics of the song, I chose to make a conceptual video.
For my video, I had to search for a really good dancer model, which was a great challenge, but I really enjoyed communicating with different people, describe them my ideas and ask them if they would like to help me. After some long searching, I finally found a model, Leonardo Vasilescu, he is my age (18 years) and he was dancing since 5 years. Leo was glad to help me with my project since he is also really passionate about music and media. He is dancing freestyle, so, when we filmed he was basically improvising. This added a plus of difficulty for me because I had to adapt to his spontaneous movements, as I was filming.
I chose to have a teen model because I am targeting mostly a young audience, but not only.
The model is from Timisoara, a town that is 300 km away from Cluj, so I planned together with him to go on a weekend in Timisoara to film. Together with Leonardo, we settled the locations which will best match with the atmosphere and connotations that the song wanted to transmit: coolness, loneliness, and melancholy.
For the outfits, I decided to use simple and basic clothes, mainly black and blue colors, as I didn't want to evidentiate the character through his clothing but through hin movements and energy.
